The image of cold dogs, lying on a hard, often wet cement floor paints a bleak picture of life in an animal shelter. That is why the Kuranda Dog Bed Company created a Donate a Bed Program to help provide dogs in shelters across the country with comfortable raised beds where they can relax during the time they are in the shelter. If you would like to help a shelter dog by providing a warm, dry, comfortable off the floor bed, just visit www.kuranda.com and click on “Donate a Bed” for the shelter of your choice.

Shelter hours:
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday 10am-4pm
Saturday and Sunday 12pm-4pm

Athenspets.net is updated with current pictures twice per week and updated status reports of each dog every other day or so. We keep it as current as we can, but there are times when you may see a dog featured here who may not still be available. Call Animal Control if you have questions about a dog.

I am happy to report that this page just gets bigger and bigger which means more and more success stories to celebrate, however, the downside is that it may take a while to download this page onto your computer. So either practice patience while you wait, or get up, go get a cup of a coffee while it's downloading, relax, and enjoy the heartwarming stories of dogs who almost didn't make it, but did. :) Thanks, angels of Athens, for continuing to adopt and save the lives of dogs like the ones below. You who do so and care for your dogs like family are heroes!

I wanted to share with you what a wonderful best friend I adopted from ACC animal control in 1996. I was a college student in Athens and went to ACC with a friend who wanted to adopt a dog. Long story short we both went home with a new dog. When Zeke first came home with me he was sickly looking and was so skinny. My roommates and I would cook him meals and always got so much love from him in return. Everyone in my neighborhood knew him as he was such a character. Zeke was so loving and protective of those he loved and we went through lots of life changes together. In 2001 we adopted his sister Holly and in 2003 Zeke allowed me to marry his new Dad, Oliver. Zeke and Oliver were inseparable as well. Zeke loved to go on walks, car rides, swim and especially later in life he loved to lay on a raft in the pool while on vacation!! We lost ol’ Zeke on May 12th, 2008 and as hard as it is to miss him so much I would never trade all the joy he brought into my life. I am not sure of Zeke’s exact age as he was full grown when I met him but we lived over 12 years together. He was an amazing companion and as others come to ACC I hope they will consider bringing home a new friend like Zeke that will touch and bless so many lives.
I have attached a few pictures of Zeke.
Thank you for all your hard work that you do to give the dogs and cats of Athens a second chance at a life! You are all heroes!!!

The week before Thanksgiving 2007, the Athens Banner-Herald ran its weekly photo of an animal at the Athens Animal Control Shelter. In this case, the animal was a blond cocker spaniel dog named "Lady" by the Shelter because she resembled "Lady" in the movie Lady and the Tramp. She had been found wandering alone with extremely matted and tangled hair – so much so that her hair had to be cut very short. She also had a problem called "Cherry Eye" with her lift eye. Nevertheless we were intrigued by this very cute-looking cocker, especially since cocker spaniels were our favorite dog breed.
We called Athens Animal Control near Thanksgiving to inquire about "Lady" but, when the call was returned after the holidays, we learned that she had been taken from the shelter by a Cocker Spaniel rescue organization (just in the nick of time, as we later learned, since she had been scheduled for euthanasia the following day). By e-mail we contacted several Cocker Spaniel rescue groups in Georgia and were fortunate enough to locate "Lady" at her foster home. When we expressed our interest in her, we learned that she would be part of an adoption program in Alpharetta on Saturday, November 31st. At Alpharetta we saw "Lady" for the first time and found that she was larger than we thought, redder in color than we thought, and looked rather spindly-legged with her hair cut so short. But there was something endearing about her, so the adoption was completed and she went home with us in our car. We renamed her Nutmeg ("Meg" for short) because of her color and the fact that she was adopted at the beginning of the Christmas season.
Now, Meg has been with us for five months and we would not want to be without her. She is an absolute sweetheart – loving, even-tempered, over-all obedient, and a constant, forgiving, and endearing companion. She obviously had lived with a family who took the time to train her. She is thoroughly house-broken, and also knew and obeyed many of the most common commands. Everyone who has come into contact with her – friends, her veterinarian, vet nurses and attendants – calls her "sweet"and, after attending obedience training, the instructor called her "darling Meg." As her hair grew out, more and more she was called "beautiful," and never more so than after her recent grooming with a "Cocker Cut." With that grooming, our rather frowsy sweety has become a much more elegant cocker lady (one acquaintance even asked if she were a "champion" upon seeing a photograph) – but still very much our "sweety." We would not give the world for her and only hope that she will have a long and happy life with us. We bless the day that we saw that photograph in the newspaper and we were able to track her down and make her a member of our family. Thank you Athens-Clarke County Animal Control for finding her and bringing her to safety; thank you Cocker Spaniel Rescue of Georgia for taking her and preserving her life; and thank you to the fateful day that we saw her photograph in the local newspaper and ultimately brought us together.
Joe and Agnes Stell
The attached photographs show: (1) "Lady" at the Animal Control shelter in November 2007 -- the photograph, or one very similar, which we saw in the Athens newspaper; (2) & (3) "Meg" after her recent grooming with a Cocker Cut -- she really looks wonderful, doesn't she?

We were just searching randomly in Feb 2008 when we found Millie (was named Charlotte), listed on Athenspets. She's still as laid back as the first day we met her and gaining weight everyday! Thought you might enjoy the picture of her waking up from her afternoon nap. She is the absolute best dog any family could ask for... Thanks for all of the hard work Athens pets!!!

I adopted Dreamie, now known as Molly, on Feb. 1, 2007.  I have never owned a Pit Bull but her sweet face on your website grabbed my heart.  She was only 5 lbs when I adopted her, just a little more than a handfull.  As you can tell from the photos, she is alot bigger now.  She is a wonderful addition to my home and she has learned to sleep in her crate at night next to my bed.  She knows what "night-night" means, and just as my children used to do when they were young, tries to convince me to continue playing just so she can stay up a little longer.  The photos were taken at my office, as she comes with me to work sometimes.  All of my clients love her and she is getting spoiled from all the attention.  I never thought I could love an animal as much as I do my Molly.

I adopted 2 boxers last year. The first was a 2 year old male (in August) that we named "ALI", although he has no fight in him...he is all about LOVE!!!!!!! (giving and receiving) He is an 80 pound lap dog. We thought he had an eye infection but it turns out he had permanent damage to his right eye and has no sight in it, but it doesn't slow him down at all.
The second was a little girl that we named "Kasie". I saw her on the website in September and knew she was coming home with me. She looked so sad and scared. I had to go into her kennel and sit with her for awhile before she would let me take her to the interaction pen. After many months she is know a happy go lucky little wiggle butt. She still has issues with strangers but we are working on it.
Just wanted to send a couple of pictures of them now. Thanks for all that you guys do for the dogs in this community. I can never thank you enough for my babies.

We adopted a dog from the Athens-Clarke County Animal Control on January 9th. She is doing well and we were able to fully housebreak her within a week! A little patience and persistence can go a long way. This is a good thing because she weighs about 50 pounds and is an indoor dog. She sleeps on my oldest daughter's bed. When she sees Rachel getting ready for bed, Savannah (the dog) takes that as her cue to jump up on the bed herself.

My family adopted Bruiser from the Athens pound about 2 1/2 weeks ago and he is adjusting very well! He knows his name and how to sit, and is completely crate trained! (We're still working on housebreaking though- down to only one accident a day...) He is so happy to be with us, he follows us everywhere! He doesnt even try to run away from us when we're outside with him! Bruiser is about 30 pounds (and growing fast) but truly believes in his heart of hearts that he's a lapdog. When he's not laying across our laps, hes jumping everywhere! Down the stairs, catching a ball, or even to give us hugs! We think he's part lab and part kangaroo. He is a riot and definitely keeps us on our toes! Thank you so much to the Athens Clarke County Animal Shelter, its employees and volunteers, for giving us this wonderful and bouncy addition to our family! We love him!

My family and I adopted Bodie in November 2005 from ACC Animal Control, and he and I have been attached at the hip ever since.  Some of you may remember him from an article they did on him in the Athens Banner Herald at the time.  They were desperately seeking a home for him because he had been with them for a long while, and time was running out.  Well, when my mom showed me the article, I knew I was gone... I knew I had to go get him and bring him home with me... and so I did.  He has been doing GREAT for over two years now.  He is absolutely perfect in all ways.  He's such a sweet boy.  And he's spoiled rotten!  He had no hair when he was rescued, and only half of it grew back, so he has thick fluffy splotches of black hair in some places, and the rest of him is simply the smoothest, softest skin!  He sleeps in my bed beside me, under the covers (he gets cold with no hair), with his head on his pillow.  And when it's really cold at night, he sleeps in his sweatshirt, which he just LOVES.  He was pretty shy when he first got here, and it was months before I ever heard him bark, and months before he picked up a toy to play.  But he opened up pretty quickly, considering where he had come from.  My family loves him too, and he expects a treat every time someone walks in the door.  For two years I have meant to bring him in for a visit, but somehow time just gets away from you.  I will make it a point to bring him in soon, though, and we will bring something for the other dogs, some blankets and treats.  Thank you all so much for working so hard to give Bodie this second chance that he so deserved.  He's a lucky dog, but I really feel like I'm the lucky one!

I adopted a dog from the Athens-Clarke County shelter about six or so months ago.  If you are associated with the shelter, you probably remember him, as he was a cruelty case pit bull you guys had named "Lawrence."  He was left tied up with no food, water or shelter, and had chewed on rocks until he had worn his teeth down to the gumline.  He was only 20lbs when brought in. He was really skinny but really sweet.  The people in the shelter told me they would like to see an updated pic of him when he was healthy, so they could add it to their success stories, but I can't find an email address for anyone on the website for animal control. I was wondering if you could pass along these pics.  I nursed "Lawrence" back to health and renamed him "Cecil."  (Or, "Thethil" if you imagine he is saying his own name!  LOL)  I then found him a permanent home in Cleveland, Ohio, where he is very loved and very happy.  He is currently 60lbs!!  The girl who adopted him is so in love with him.  She says he is the most loving dog she has ever met. Thanks for sharing these pics with the animal control folks.  I heard they all really loved him there, so I wanted them to know that he is very healthy and happy in his new life!

We adopted Sadie from animal control in December of 2006.  Since then she had been to clicker training (where she was nicknamed “Sadie-Runs-With-Scissors”) with great results.  Tina re-nicknamed her “Zen-Sadie” by the end of the course.  She is doing great, and is about to get a brother from animal control.  These pictures are from her first trip to beach, where she learned a lot about waves and birds!   We are so happy to have her, and hope everyone gets their next pet from animal control!

This Patrick Hodge and here is a picture of Tobin who we adopted a few months ago. He is the life of the house with his constant energy and peppy attitude. He loves playing with our cat and going to the dog park. My girlfriend and I could not be happier with him.

We adopted Layla on September 11th 2007. She has made such a great impact in our lives. At first we were not sure how the crazy puppy would react with our two other dogs, but now they are all one big family. She is nuts, but we couldn't imagine life without her. WE LOVE OUR POUND PUPPY!

I thought you might like to know what happened to Grace. The young BC cross that the shelter listed as feral and wouldn’t adopt her to anyone but a rescue. With the help of Rufus Rescue in Atlanta I pulled her and kept her for a week. Then I sent her to her foster home in Florida. This is the Lady who discovered her on your site. When she arrived at my house she slept the first night and all the next day. After that we found her to be a joy to have. It was very hard to let her go. The following pictures were taken on the second day with us. This was not a feral pup she just couldn’t handle the environment at the shelter. Please share these photos with the shelter employees if you want.

For years, my favorite breed has been the Boston Terrier. I've wanted one all of my life. Last year around Christmas of 2006, I was volunteering at Animal Control. I left my friend that morning joking, "If there's a Boston Terrier there, I'm coming home with it." Much to my surprise, there was the sweetest little Boston Terrier there named Clue who had just given birth to puppies and was surrendered. It was fate! I had to adopt her. Four and a half months later, I was, again, volunteering at Animal Control. I came upon a five month old Boston Terrier puppy with a broken leg who was surrendered. I couldn't believe it! It turned out this little puppy was the daughter of my Boston Terrier, now renamed Lola. I don't believe in coincidences, so I adopted her broken leg and all! We named her Lily, and she is now completely healthy! These two are known for their non-stop energy and unconditional love! Thank you so much for giving my husband and I the two greatest dogs and for reuniting a mother and daughter!
Thanks so much for all that you do for this shelter. Having a website with pictures and descriptions helps many dogs get adopted that wouldn't stand a chance at another shelter. Thank you so much for your time and effort!

I adopted Lola from ACC shelter in Feb '07.  She turns a year old at the end of the month.  I love her so much and she is such a sweet and wondeful dog.  She is also very very smart and has learned tons of tricks.   I couldn't imagine life without my Lola.  I wanted to submit her pictures to you.  The first one is the day I took her home and the second one is in Dudley Park last month.   Ya'll are great, thank you for all you do.

My name is Koren Glikin, I adopted a small black lab puppy from you about 6 months ago. I've been meaning to bring her by but my busy schedule won't allow it. Here are some pictures of her since we've gotten her to now. She was once called 'Pee Wee', we named her Lexie. She is not 55 pounds and still has a lot of growing to do. She has brought so much love and happiness into my life, I can't thank all of you enough for the wonderful work you do.

Thanks for taking the time out of your busy schedule to read this!  We recently adopted a beagle boy from Athens-Clarke County Animal Control and he is just doing great!  His name in the pound was "Mellow Yellow" and he has since been renamed Charlie after Charlie Brown, because when we got him he was the saddest most depressed scared little guy ever.  He is still putting on weight after his ordeal, but he is already showing off his great personality.  He has a typical hound-dog nose and howl, and loves hanging out with his new sister and playing in the back yard.  We are so glad we could bring him into our family and give him the love and attention he deserves.  If it weren't for your website and the volunteers' efforts, we may never have met him.

I don't think we ever sent a letter telling how much we have enjoyed our pet we adopted from you!
Two years ago, our Rottie/Lab mix passed away at 14 years old.  My husband missed him terribly.  In Jan. 06 we visited, looking for a bulldog (from Athens, of course) When your staff asked us what type pets we had had before, and we told her a Rottie mix....guess what....one had just been brought in that day!  The first photo is when he saw "Kat" there at your facility and the second photo is a few days later in our backyard!  She has been a wonderful pet...cuddly, protective, and even liked our Persian cat from day one!  For only being two years old when we adopted her, she fit into our home perfectly.  Thank you for providing the service you do. There are no animals in the world that are more appreciative and loving than those adopted out.  They seem to know how to pick their NEW homes! In our opinion...Rotties are the BEST pets around!

These are a few snapshots of my dog Stella Blue.  We adopted her from the Athens Animal Control facility a little over a year ago.  She was under six weeks old when she was adopted (shown in the picture on the right), and the runt of her litter.  We found her in a kennel with her big brother and big sister, but once we saw her cute little blue eyes we knew that she was going to be the next member of our family.  She has been a blessing with her constant good humor and willingness to play.  At our best guess she is a lab/pit bull mix, but as far as we are concerned she is just our 'little girl'.  She loves to cuddle and play ball.  We are working on getting her used to water, but as of right now she doesn't like it.  One thing is for sure though, she certainly enjoys sleeping right on top of her daddy at night (when she's not in her crate) which at 65 lbs makes for a restless night for dad.  Anyhow, I was hoping that she might make the success page

I adopted Ruby (formerly Maggie) just a month ago in May. Already, she has found her way into the hearts of everyone around her! She is a very energetic and playful dog, but is still sweet and completely spoiled! I can't imagine life without her! She is so loyal and will make a great guard dog someday, but she'll always be a spoiled house dog!!

Just wanted to share that Jack is doing very well after I adopted him on June 2nd. He now spends his days playing with lots of dog toys and he really loves to sleep on my bed :-) ...and I wouldn't have it any other way! He's absolutely wonderful!

Do you remember this sweet boy?? i adopted him (thanks to your website) about 7 months ago!  he is all grown up now!

This is Layla (formerly eva) I adopted her last year from Athens. She is doing well and is soo very sweet. She was heartworm positive, but after her treatment she is doing very very well.

We adopt Chloe (formerly named Blossom) 3 years ago from the Athens Animal Control and she is the best and cutest dog ever!  I am attaching a picture of her.  Also, we have adopted 2 other dogs from Athens Animal Control for family members in Savannah, GA and they have also turned out to be great dogs!

Leroy Hatsis is a bassador (basset and Lab mix). Leroy is the sweetest and best dog in the whole world. Leroy is a real airport dog, he greets all visitors with kiss. Leroy came to us by accident. We found Leroy stuck in a stormdrain at the airport where we work. Here is his story, about 3 years ago it was an average day at the airport with one exception, we had an unusual visitor, a little short legged lab, he was scruffy and a little smelly but cute as a button. He hung around all day and greeted everyone. Since he had on an orange collar I figured he belonged to someone. Well at closing time he was still hanging around, so we told him bye and left. Next day at work, no doggie visitor, so I figured he went back home. Until later when I kept hearing a whimpering, crying sound. But I could not find where it was coming from. So I did a little searching but nothing. I decided to look down the hill. As I was standing on the storm drain that runs along the ramp I looked and saw nothing, just as I was about to turn and walk away I looked down and there right under my feet was an animal in the drain. I yelled and the animal yelled. My husband came running over and freed the poor little thing. He was cut up and bleeding.  We took him to the vet and we advertised him in the local paper as a lost dog and received no results. So we now had a new pet. We named him Leroy and fell in love, as did as all visitors to the airport. Then one morning on the way to work, on the side of the road was a huge sign that read “LOST DOG”. I pulled over and read it, it was describing my Leroy. I jotted down the phone number and called it as soon as I got to the airport, I asked them to please let me keep him but they wanted him back. I asked them to please give me until the afternoon to break the news to everyone, and they agreed. That afternoon they drove up and called him and he went running. My heart was breaking as I watched him trot to their car with his little ice cream in his mouth. Everything at the airport seemed a little sad after that. For days I was very sad about Leroy. Then two weeks later I received a phone call and it was about Leroy, the owners asked me if I wanted him back. Hooray ! They brought him back to me. They said he was depressed all the time. He came back to me and is the best dog in the world. He greets all visitors and gets lots of attention. He even has pilots and passengers that fly in just to see him. He is the greatest.

My husband was stationed in Athens for Supply Corps School in 2005.
We adopted Annie while we were there.  I saw her on your website and went in the next day to take her home.  We love her so much and couldn't imagine life with out her.

We adopted Mollie in Feb of 2005.  We had recently lost one of beloved dogs, and his companion (a chocolate lab) was devastated.  So, we brought Harvey to the shelter to "pick" out his new companion.  We had looked at several dogs, but Harvey walked right up to the cage of the skinniest, dirtiest dogs there.  We knew right then that this was the one.  She had just been picked up that morning, so we had to wait a few days before we even knew if we could bring her home.  After we brought her home, it took her a while to come out of her shell, but now, more than 2 years later, she is the most spoiled dog in the world!  She is no longer skinny.  She lives in the house, and even sleeps on the bed with us at night.  We were truly blessed to be able to find her, and give her a forever home!.

Hello, my darling Tulip continues to make life perfect. Another big thank you to ACC Animal Control is in order for sending the pooch formerly known as Latifah home with me last July.

I have 2 success stories for you.  In November we found a shelter puppy at Petland (from Oconee county shelter).  By May she was 10 months old and was able to knock over our 11 year old dog.   So we decided to check the shelter to see if there was a young dog available for her to play with.  We found #21974 (a black lab mix), which the shelter had named “Mandy” (she had been there over a week and was almost out of time).  She was very shy and thin, but opened up and licked my husband’s face and acted playful when we took her next to other dogs.  We brought her home and named her “Lister”.  She and our previous shelter pup (on the couch) get along great, and are very happy.  In June we went back to the shelter to donate a bag of dog food.  My husband wanted to give some attention to the dogs that were stuck in pens, and fell in love with ledger #22115.  We didn’t really need another dog, but she was almost out of time and we couldn’t let her be put down.  We brought her home and named her Havoc.  All 3 girls are very playful, love walks, and get along great.  Havoc is very big (and has the nickname “moose”) but is a loveable teddy bear.  Lister can be sassy but is a good dog.  We’re glad we have such a full household.

This is my dog Rhysie "Rhys".  I adopted her from the ACC shelter in 2002.  She is wonderful and I can't imagine not having her!

In May of 2006 my boyfriend and I lost our beloved Boston terrier, Chief. We had just moved into a new apartment and Chief has certain breathing problems that limited his  sense of smelling. So,the chances of him finding his way home were pretty much slim too none. For months we posted lost dog signs and did ever thing possible to try and find him. However, our search did not succeed and we eventually came to grips with the fact that Chief was not coming home. My boyfriend and I are both huge animal fanatics and our house never quite felt like a home without an animal not in it so, eventually we decided to adopt another dog. We knew off the bat that we wanted a dog that needed help. In August of 2006, I pulled up your website and saw a little chihuahua mix and I convinced my boyfriend to at least go take a look. When we arrived at the Athens animal control, of course we looked at the chihuahua, but we also passed a cage that held a little corgi hound mix with biggest golden eyes I had ever seen! We stopped and kneeled at the dog as he threw himself against his cage and stuck he nose out to try and lick any passers by. We continued on our way to see the chihuahua but the whole time I kept thinking about that poor corgi mix that we had passed. Eventually we went back into the office to file an application for the chihuahua but, for a second we glanced out of the window and I noticed the little corgi staring back at me with those eyes. So, we decided to file an application for him too. We were told to call back in a couple of days and we decided what ever dog was meant be ours would be ours. It turns out that the chihuahua had 9 other applications before us and the corgi had none. Long story short we adopted the corgi which we named oliver(perfect name for an orphan right?).So,heres when the story gets good, the day after we adopted Oliver, my boyfriend's dad got a call from a women that worked at the front desk at animal control and told us that she saw a found picture in Critter Magazine that looked a lot like Chief. It turns out it was chief and he had made it all the way to the mountains of North Carolina with a older women and her husband. Long story short we now call this Chief's Awaking journey and feel blessed that such a horrible event brought us Oliver. As you can see in the pictures that I have attached, Chief and Oliver have become the best of friends and we have the best companions a person could wish for! If you would please help us to post this in your success stories, it would be greatly appreciated. I think this a wonderful story of how much the animal contol does!

Do you remember #22808?  The black male neutered Labrador Retriever was rescued from the shelter on 29 September 2006.  His original name was Sammy, but we decided to rename him Alexander Sonic.  His first name is after my middle name and the middle name after my favorite video game character.  Alex is doing well with my family and me; he goes on walks regularly, every time I go to the pet store or park, I make sure that he is in the car with me.  He is such a joy to be around.  Alex is a people dog; he does not enjoy the company of other dogs.  He loves attention (especially from women) and gets along with everyone.  The children love playing with him and I love him for being there on those days when I need him the most.  If you ever come to visit, he is usually sleeping or watching television on the couch.  The only concern I have for Alexander is that he does not bark enough nor distinguish complete strangers from friends that come to the house, other than that, he is a good dog.  Now, if only he can get over the whole “Car Sickness” thing…

I adopted a dog back in March. I fell in love with her picture on your website and drove from Atlanta to Athens to get her. When I got her, she was only 10 pounds. Now she's 80 pounds (at 9 months old) and still growing (although I wish she would stop). She is the sweetest dog and I can't imagine life without her. She is spoiled rotten with numerous walks a day, dog park during the weekends, random trips to the lake and mountain, play time with neighborhood dogs, a house to run around in, backyard to potty in, doggy daycare, toys, treats, treats and treats! But she shows how much she appreciates it with the daily kisses and hugs.

Thank you so much for your website.  In spring of 2003 I spotted "Rocky" on your site.  He was an "old" beagle (estimated age was about 7-10) but I couldn't resist his big, brown eyes.  Newman, as we named him, has now been with us over 3 years and he is wonderful.  When we went to the shelter to visit, and eventually adopt him, we actually got to meet the control officer that picked him up.  She said they called him "Crusty McGee" because of how dirty and beat up he was and she almost thought about pretending she didn't see him because she could tell he was old and she didn't think anyone would adopt him. She only put him in her truck because she was afraid he would get hit by a car.  She was wrong - my husband and I decided Newman was perfect for us. He had heartworms when we got him and we originally thought he might be too old and frail to undergo the treatment to get rid of them.  He had a medical emergency because of the heartworms after we had him for about a year and we thought we might lose him.  But he was strong enough to survive that as well as the treatment to kill the worms.  He is now feisty as ever (for a 10-13 year old beagle with mild arthritis) and completely heartworm free.  We love him to death and he tolerates us (and his sister as we adopted a rat terrier mix here in Atlanta).  I just wanted to thank you for your site.  I would love to put his story on your success page just to let folks know the older dogs make great pets too.

We adopted Latifah, renamed her Tulip and moved her to the country.  She’s having a lot of fun going on long walks in the woods and trampling through creeks.  She loves watermelon and trying to get into the laps (and hearts) of her new people friends.

I'm sure you still remember "Hulk #22389". His new name is Boomer and this is a photo of him with his new dad. He's spoiled rotten and has probably gained a few more pounds. He lives on 30 acres which has a 3 acre lake and he gets to travel to and from his swimming hole on Phil's ATV. Phil has taken BoomBoom to all the neighbors to introduce him to everyone as we live in a rural area. Boomer adores riding on the ATV and will even sit on it when it is parked in the garage.

This is Buddy, the dog we got from the Athens-Clarke County pound recently.  (We found him via the athenspets.net site). It was REALLY hard to get a halfway decent shot of him, because every time I got ready to take the picture, he’d move!!!!!   I play ball, fetch the sock, fetch the bone, tug of war with his rope, catch the treat, and other games with him.  He hangs out with me most of the time in the evenings, sprawled out on my feet or legs, if I happen to be still.

This is scout we adopted him a year ago him and my daughter have been inseparable ever since he has made a lovely extension to our family. We couldn't have asked for a better more loving dog. he is a very good dog and enjoys cuddling in bed with my daughter everynight.

We adopted "Clown" in December.  We renamed her Mrs. Beasely and she has become the Princess of the family - here she is in her favorite place - sitting on my husband's lap.  She is the most wonderful dog - I just have  to wonder every day how someone was able to give her up.  Their loss was certainly our gain. Thank you for your wonderful website, without it we would never had found her - we came from Alpharetta and let me tell you it was well worth the trip.  Thanks again. The Ulams

Here's a picture of "Bailey" who I adopted from Athens-
Clarke County Animal Control on April 1, 2006. He has the
sweetest temperament and loves everyone, including the cat. He especially enjoys going to the dog park or playing with his toys. I'm so glad I adopted him and I couldn't ask for a better dog.

This is Sugar Plum adopted April 27, 2004 from Athens Clarke Animal Control. We lived in Athens until a year ago, the moved up here to Boston.  I think she has really enjoyed the cold weather with all that fur.  We're going to be moving again to florida, soon, though. She is great b/c she is so low maintenance (which is great for me)...and all my friends are amazed at how good and calm she is.  She never jumps on you, barks (unless someone rings the doorbell), drools, slobbers, chew/tear up things, or potties in the house.  A perfect well-mannered Southern gal.  She is afraid of thunderstorms and fireworks, sirens, etc (really loud noises), and she recently developed a fear of the frying pan b/c sometimes it gets to smoky in the kitchen and sets off the fire alarm (too loud for Shug!).  Shug doesnt do a whole lot of tricks, but she does know A LOT of words!  She's just the best little Beastie ever!!

This is Meagen, whom I've had the pleasure of petsitting.  She's a bundle of love and energy, and this pitiful, sad looking face now wears a constant smile!  She was adopted on August 23, 2001.  This lucky little girl went to a home where she is loved and taken care of.  Thank goodness for big-hearted people!

"When I saw those sad eyes staring at me I knew I couldn't leave her there. Sweety (formerly Rachel) had been there for 11 days with no applications in site. We knew we had to save this sweet girl. Sweety is now a big pound lap dog who thinks she's really 10 pounds, and loves playing with our little dogs. She loves everyone, especially kids, and will sit and wait to give you kisses. She still looking for her forever home, but her time with us has been a precious gift."

FidoAdopted on September 18, 2001
This sweetie was my baby...one of the dogs that has stood out in my mind for the past year.  He was injured and in pain, but as you see in the picture on the right, he was still such a sweetie.  His loving little kisses broke my heart, and even though he was barely able to stand up to get out of his cage, he was adopted!! I have never heard a follow-up on this boy, though I would love to.  I hope he's as happy as he deserves to be!:-)
*Update! I finally heard from Fido's happy owners! Heartwarming! Thank you for the update. This is why I keep going...

"The dog called Fido on your page is now Cyrus and he has a very happy life now.  He lives very happily with us and our other dog, Rocky, an Australian Shepherd/Terrier mix and ASPCA shelter dog from Idaho.  Just like you say, Cyrus was in pain and would not walk when we saw him at the shelter.  He was so friendly and loveable, we had to help him.  He was diagnosed with ponosteitis, a bone problem in which the bone marrow begins to be converted to solid bone that seems to be associated with young large breed dogs.  Pano is very painful and may affect one leg, then another or multiple legs at once.  The good news is that  many dogs either outgrow  the problem or it can be controlled through diet.  Cyrus began to do much better after a couple of weeks with us.  He regained the strength in his hips and now shows no signs of being sick.  He runs, plays, wrestles and likes to take walks.  He is a big (75lb) puppy, full of energy and love.  If one word can describe Cyrus, it is love.  That is all he knows how to do.

"Kuma's story is a bittersweet one; I saw him listed on your site. I came down to visit him, and decided that day to bring him home. Kuma had entropion, fly-bitten ears, was underweight, and had a very bad case of heartworms.  We set about getting him healthy again.  The picture I've attached is from after his eye surgery.  3 weeks ago Kuma suddenly became ill, and although we brought him in for vet treatment, he passed away suddenly one Friday afternoon while we were at work.  We miss Kuma terribly, but take comfort in knowing that he had a loving home for the last few months of his life. On behalf of Kuma, and all of the other dogs you work so hard for, I thank you for your efforts."

Adopted November 21, 2001
This was another very special boy whose adorable eyes and loving demeanor touched my heart. Here's what his new owners had to say:
"I saw "Frank's" soulful, pleading eyes on your website and knew he was the dog for us. He lost that sad look the minute he came home,  almost a year ago on the day before Thanksgiving.  He had been skunked before being picbrought into animal control, so our house smelled like turkey, pumpkin pie, and skunk for the holiday!  Jackson (Frank) is a big 90 pound,  laid-back, silly who welcomes all our foster dogs and cats with licks.  He is a true love hound and we are so lucky he is part of our family."

Adopted on January 18, 2002
"Like most people, I was quite skeptical about adopting a Rottie, but I have found that Hannah (like most Rotties) embodies exactly what I was looking for in a dog.  She is complex, sensitive, and loving while being a constant protector.  She is never offensively aggressive and is always in tune with our comfort level in any given situation.  Most folks who meet Hannah are downright surprised with her submissive and friendly posturing.  At the same time, I travel frequently, and I gain great peace of mind from having Hannah look after my girlfriend.  Hannah would only become aggressive in a life threatening situation, and I am utterly confident in her ability to recognize such a situation...as well as her willingness to put her life on the line to diffuse it."

Teddy - Adopted on February 23
"Thanks for your website!!! We had been looking for a doggie friend for our 18 month old puppy dog, Bosco, when we stumbled upon your site.... After looking around for a bit I decided to give Teddy a shot at playing with Bosco, and wouldn't you know it! They hit it off and Bosco perked right up.... The first place we took her was to Petsmart, where we proceeded to gather far more toys, and treats, for her than our preliminary Budget allowed, but seeing her prance around the puppy store from one squeeking plaything to another, it was more than worth it....Other good news, she and Bosco hit it off and started wrestling and playing tug-o-war with Bosco's toy rope.  They're now both exhausted from playing all day by time I get home, and cuddle up at night together and go  to sleep... Thank you so much for what you do, I refuse to think of the alternative had (Teddy) Dizzy not found her home here with us."

Ally
"My ALLY is doing great!!!  This beautiful chocolate lab has endeared herself to the whole family.  Even though she is a bundle of energy, she realizes that I am a senior citizen and not able to walk her right now.  She is happy just being a laid-back pampered pet.  I thought I was getting an outside dog, but Ally had different ideas, and she established herself indoors.  I couldn't have looked the world over and found a more lovable companion."

Hope-Adopted April 8
"We moved, and Sadie has become an absolute BEACH DOG!!  She loves it!  She was intimidated by the water and waves for the first couple of weeks, but then all of a sudden she ventured into shallow water, then water up to her chest, and now she has even attempted to doggie paddle a bit!  She loves getting in the water now-- we can't keep her out.  She goes for daily walks on the beach, digging in the sand, playing with the other dogs, and chasing after bords.  She also loves to lay out on our front porch and watch the people (and numerous dogs) go by.  All in all, she is spoiled rotten.  Jason and I both can't imagine our lives without her."

Wags - adopted on May 29
This girl almost didn't make it. She was one who really touched my heart and I was devestated when she was still there after almost 2 weeks.  But thank goodness, a wonderful rescue group came to her rescue...and at the last possible minute! Now she lives in NJ.
"I wanted to give you the status of Wags (the wonderful little miracle). She is doing absolutely wonderful...She rolled in the grass and ran with the toys and  just laid in the sun...The next morning, we woke up bright and early with her two canine pals and prepared for the dog walk that morning at a beautiful park in Annapolis... Now that I have her, and think, how in the world could anyone ever live knowing this sweet girl was going to be put down. Thank GOD for happy endings!!!"

Minnie
Rescued on May 31, 2002
Transported up to a new home in New Jersey!

Scruffy - Adopted on July 19, 2002
"Scruffy is home. She has sarcoptic mange...I don't care how old she is I just want to help her get well and have a great life until she must fall a sleep. Now she has eaten a can of food, she had her water and medication and guess what?? She is sleeping like a baby."
This was one special little girl...and she was so very lucky!! Thank God for miracles and kind people!

Honey - Adopted on August 9, 2002
She is very calm and well behaved.  She spent her first night in our bed with the other female Yorkies and never moved from her spot next to me!  What bed etiquette she posseses...If we can "spoil" this girl a few more years, it will be a bountiful reward for the love our furry friends so genuinely bestow upon us."

Casey and Rambo - Adopted Summer 2002
"They are two of the greatest dogs!  They both have stole our hearts. I'm so glad that your website helped me find them. I shudder to think what would have happened to them had it not been for their pictures that were sent to me from a friend. They really seem to know that they have been saved. All they want to do is sit in my lap and be loved. They know that they've gotten a new lease on life. I have never rescued before, but now this is the only way we'll ever go. To see the love in their eyes makes it all worth while. I love them very much and am glad that they are now in their forever home."

Georgia - Adopted summer 2002
Transported to her forever home in NJ. "Georgia is doing great.  She has becomecomfortable here and can be seen with a wagging tail every AM before she runs with Jennie and at school as  she gets attention from many enthusiastic students.  Last week she ran with  the soccer team.  She loved it, like being a member of a pack or herd.  It  was amazing to see her gallop in full stride.  Georgia is an amazing dog!  We are so grateful to have her."

Heidi (aka Humpty) - ADOPTED September 16
My husband and I have been viewing your website since we moved to Athens. We saw the shepherd mix you named Humpty on your website, and immediately went down to meet her.  An application was ahead of us but we put in our application, kept our fingers crossed and sure enough she came home with us September 16.  She is an absolute angel and a joy to our family!!!   She is a bundle of joy is so incredibly intelligent, if only people would give these angles a chance!!! Thank you for putting our family in contact with her via your webpage!

Winston -
Adopted in June, 2002
"Winston is the sweetest-tempered dog in the world.  Always happy, always friendly and always a clown.  Here's a big secret: Lab/chow mixes are the greatest dogs!  Don't overlook those 'plain ole black dogs' - they are absolute jewels."

Lucy (aka, Silver) August, 2002!
"My boyfriend and I adopted her, and we love her SO much! We take her everywhere because she is so polite and easygoing. She has stayed in some nice hotels, but she prefers the cheap motels with sliding-glass doors that go out onto the lawn. I've attached the jpeg you posted then. She doesn't look much like that anymore. Her coat is really shiny and she wears her ears much higher! She has become an awesome fetcher, and she has learned all kinds of tricks. I don't think I've ever known a smarter dog.
We live in an apartment in Athens now, but we recently bought a 12-acre farm out in the country, so soon Silver will have all the romping space she wants."

Rosie - Adopted December, 2002
Every night I touch her, I hear her soft contented sigh. I tell her that I love more than she does. Then she kisses me back as if she's saying "No, I do more than you do." Allyson, I give her a really big kiss. Our faces are all wet... yes, we are falling in love..... Thank you for letting us find her. Our family is now complete.

Rosie - Adopted January 2003
"Thank you for putting so much time into making a website to get dogs the loving homes they deserve. I was ready to spend 300+ dollars for a dog from a breeder when a friend told me I should check out your website.
At the shelter I fell in love with a Border Collie puppy. She came home with me the next day, and she loves her new home. She never stops wagging her tail, and she has endless energy! Thanks so much for helping me find Rosie. She is my new best friend, and the best dog I could have ever asked for!"

Ben was adopted on August 27, 2002.  He is about seven months old now. He is a sheer joy in our lives.  He has such a great personality and is very playful, curious, loyal, and affectionate.  I cannot imagine our lives without him.  It is so nice to come home and have him wagging his tail, jumping around, and shaking his rump while I pet him.  We are so lucky to have him.  Ben is priceless and in a very VERY loving home."

"My husband drove 2 1/2 hours in the rain from North Augusta, S. C. to Athens to rescue Scooby and Scrappy and everyone at our rescue group just adores them.  Scrappy was adopted today, and I am sure Scooby will find his "forever" home very soon. We can't normally drive that far to get two puppies, but their little pictures just pulled at my heart."

CHARLIE- Adopted May 6th 2003
"Charlie was at animal control with two of his litter mates. They were 8 weeks old and Charlie was the last to be adopted. He was on board to be euthanized the next day. Now I can't imagine what it would be like without him. He is a wonderful dog. Thank you for your website and thanks to all the animal control employees and volunteers."

Dignan- Adopted August, 2005
"We adopted dignan aka Cubby last August. He is the love of our lives and now I'm trying to convince my husband that he needs a sister."
