I often get emails from people asking how they can help the shelter pups be more comfortable during their stay. Here is an option for those who wish to help. For other ways, please click on the "Wish List" link above. |
The image of cold dogs, lying on a hard, often wet cement floor paints a bleak picture of life in an animal shelter. That is why the Kuranda Dog Bed Company created a Donate a Bed Program to help provide dogs in shelters across the country with comfortable raised beds where they can relax during the time they are in the shelter. If you would like to help a shelter dog by providing a warm, dry, comfortable off the floor bed, just visit www.kuranda.com and click on “Donate a Bed” for the shelter of your choice. We've had 25 beds donated as of August 18. We're almost there! We have 32 cages to fill at Athens-Clarke Animal Control and could use a couple of extra beds to go in the indoor pens we have as well as to act as replacement beds if ever needed! The beds are working out really well and are holding up well! The dogs seem to be enjoying them. Thanks to those who have donated so far! |

Sadie - 26748Dog of the week for the week of Aug. 18 Urgent Case!! |
![]() ![]() |
Sadie is in an unfortunate predicament - she is an owner surrender, which means that she is living on borrowed time. She is an absolute sweetheart, and she is good with dogs, cats, and kids. She is also housebroken and sits on command. The reason she is looking for a new home is because she liked to mark her territory, but I'm sure that this habit could be trained out of her with some patient guidance. Sadie's previous owners said that she is spayed, but the documentation was not available to prove this, so she may or may not already be spayed (they just would need to check to make sure she is spayed). Sadie is energetic as puppies tend to be,and she enjoys running, so she'd be the perfect running partner for an avid runner, or someone who enjoys jogging. Please come and meet this sweetheart soon before her time runs out! |

The Highway Travelers - #s26765-26770 |
This little bunch was found dumped on the side of the highway, can you believe it?? It's quite disturbing that people still think that is an appropriate thing to do - they should be ashamed. These little pups aren't too much worse for the wear however; they were mighty hungry upon arriving at Animal Control, but have stuffed their little bellies, and moved on to the next best thing, napping! They like to curl up under the bed in a big pile together, and they are so small that you might not see them from outside the run! These kids really would love to grow up in responsible, loving homes, where they won't be thrown out like trash ever again! |

Fetch - #26747 |
![]() ![]() ![]() |
Fetch is a fun-loving boy! He has a few reddish brindle spots on a white body, just enough to give him a cute face and splash of color! Fetch was ready to get out of his pen and spend some time with people! He’s still young, and has a good amount of energy. Fetch says why waste money on a gym membership- he’s a great motivator to get outside and have some fun! This boy comes pre-programmed to love chasing after balls, so finding an outlet for his energy is no problem. If you come by to see him, be sure to grab a toy from the bucket by the door- Fetch will be happy to show off for you. |

Cookie - 26755 |
![]() ![]() ![]() |
Cookie is a good-natured, affectionate girl. She has a demeanor that matches her face perfectly- sweet as can be. Unfortunately, it appears that someone has been using a muzzle of sorts that irritated her nose a bit, but it didn’t bother her when I accidentally touched it. Cookie seemed a bit unsure when I first entered her pen, but her affection was easily bought with a dog biscuit or two. She accepted the leash, enjoyed a few pats on the head, and then went calmly with me into the interaction area. Cookie seems like a sensitive young lady and knows that good manners get a dog far in life. She was very careful when taking treats from me and didn’t once jump up for food or attention. After a moment to sniff and use the potty (she may already be housebroken), Cookie sidled up next to me for some good old fashioned people-watching. She seemed very content to enjoy the shade on a summer day with her new human friend. I can honestly say this Cookie is a |

Chief - #26756 |
![]() ![]() |
Chief is a good lookin’ fella! He is a big boy, at 73 lbs, but every ounce of him is pure sweetness. He has the markings of a German Shepherd Dog, and the face of an angel! Chief was eager to get out of his pen and relieved himself immediately, which is a very good sign in regards to housebreaking. This good boy enjoyed exploring the interaction pen, but also happily reveled in the attention he received from visitors. Chief was picked up by animal control and has a collar on but no ID tags, so there’s no way to contact his owners. Don’t let this sweet dog’s journey end here- come in and save his life today! |

Corazon - #26762 |
![]() ![]() ![]() |
Corazon is Spanish for “heart,” and this adorable pup wears hers- not on her sleeve, but rather smack-dab on her left hip! If you look closely, you can see that one of Corazon’s beautiful brindle spots looks like a sideways heart. And loving is this young girl’s favorite past-time. She really left a great impression with me thanks to her unending affection and willingness to please… plus that cool coat! She’s not going to be a very big dog at all, but will have endless amounts of affection to give to her new family. This petite Pit mix is a beauty, inside and out. Come and visit Corazon, and let her steal your heart today! |

Sheila - #26764 |
![]() ![]() ![]() |
Sheila is a good medium-sized dog, and has a neat little face with ears that stand up right on top! She definitely was very photogenic, as her ears were pricked forward, paying attention to everything going on around her. This was Sheila’s first day here at the pound, and the commotion was more than she’s used to. Sheila paced a bit in the interaction pen, but I think this was due to nerves mostly. Sheila came back to me for some reassurance and company so I think that she enjoys human attention very much. Like all herding breeds Cattle dogs need to have a “job” to do in order to be happy. This could be anything: Sheila’s new owners could channel her attention towards retrieving, running or even agility and fly ball! She'll love you for it! |

Bridget - #26733 |
![]() ![]() ![]() |
Bridget is an absolutely adorable puppy. She seems to like other dogs (even though they are more than 2x her size) and her fur is incredibly soft! She really enjoys cuddling and looking adorable for the camera! Bridget walks well on a leash and she enjoyed playing in the interaction pen. Come and meet this beautiful Bridget and you'll absolutely fall in love with this beauty! |
Todd - #26749 |
Todd is a sweet little boy. He is a small dog (perfect for someone looking for a pint-sized companion) and he is already neutered! Todd may not have had the best life so far (you can see in the photos what look like marks from a muzzle), but all he craves is a loving owner who will spend time with him and take care of him - is that too much for this little guy to ask for? Todd seems like he could be a total lap dog, as he enjoyed all of the attention I gave him. He doesn't seem to mind other dogs (even ones that are much bigger than him) and he walks well on a leash. Come and meet Todd soon before his time runs out! RECLAIMED |

Derek - #26750 |
Derek is a handsome boy. He seems to get along well with other dogs and he walks superbly on a leash. He is a larger dog, but he is very easy to handle since he is clearly leash trained. Derek also listens to commands very well too and he posed nicely for me while I took photos of him for the website. Come and meet Derek soon and you'll see what a great dog he is - he's looking for his forever family, could it be you? |

Two Men and a Little Lady - #s26752-26754 |
![]() ![]() ![]() |
These three adorable puppies were just brought in as I was about to leave Animal Control, so I didn't get a chance to take them for a walk or play with them, since they were getting checked in. They seemed scared, but who wouldn't be, I'm sure the truck ride to Animal Control is frightening for any dog, because they don't know where they are being taken! I'm sure that these two men and little lady will be running around and playing in no time once they get acclimated to their new surroundings. Come and meet this lovely trio soon! |

Duncan - #26744 Urgent Case!! |
![]() |
Don't let the white on his muzzle fool you - this fella is in the prime of his life. (I had a black dog whose muzzle turned white at age 3.) The impound sheet on his kennel door had an extra note that said this boy is extra sweet, so he comes highly recommended. When we first took him out of his kennel he was a little subdued, but in just a few minutes his lovableness came out. You can't blame him for being a little frightened at being in doggy jail - it takes many dogs a little while to realize that the place isn't so bad and the guards are very nice ;) But it sure isn't home! This boy is handsome and deserving, please give him another one! |

This tiny guy was all by himself in his pen, but he was putting up a brave front. He looks a little worried in his pictures, but it isn't hard to imagine him dancing and wiggling for joy in his future happy home. He may be little, but he's got a lot to give! |

Sadie - # 26746 |
![]() ![]() |
Is Sadie a red haired beauty or what??? She's built like a little mack truck, but she told us that just like Superman, she only uses her power for 'truth, justice and the american way' (or any 'way' that's nice ;) Although she hadn't been at Animal Control long, she was taking the whole place in stride, and really enjoyed her time in the interaction pen. Like most pitbulls, she's a delight to be around. |
Tex and Buster - #26734 |
![]() ![]() |
Tex is a sweet lab pup mixed possibly with hound to give him those long soft ears. He is sharing a pen with his friend Buster, and is a bit shyer of the two. Tex was very unfamiliar with the leashes we use at the pound, and frightened by them- but don’t let this deter you from taking him out for some play! Once he got into the interaction pen, Tex calmed down and began to explore. Tex is a typical teenager puppy and would benefit from regular exercise and some nice ground rules, as he does jump a bit. Once I put him on his side to relax, he quieted right down. After a few repetitions, he seemed to understand that he shouldn’t jump, so I think this boy will be a quick learner! The one thing he doesn’t need to learn?? How to be sweet and loving; Tex is great at that!

Lady - # 26732 |
![]() ![]() |
Lady lives up to her name with her impeccable manners. While I was getting her leash ready outside of her pen, Lady waited calmly and patiently. I didn't hear one peep from this little girl, instead I received a sweet smile that seemed to say, "Whenever you're ready, it would be my pleasure to explore outside with you." Once in the interaction pen, Lady sniffed around for a few minutes, checking in on me with a glance up and a wag of her beautiful, full tail. After a minute, Lady decided to give me some company and stay by my side in the pen. This precious girl is listed as a border collie mix, and looks like a similar breed, the Australian Shepherd. However, she was nice and mellow even with all the raucous around her.

Buster - # 26735 |
![]() ![]() ![]() |
Buster is named for his adorable bunny-like ears which flop right on top of his head. He quite possibly could be part Boxer. Buster is sharing a pen with Tex, as well as the little bit of shade in the pen! Buster is very underweight, especially since he's a growing boy. He needs a home and loving family to shower him with hugs, pets, and treats! Like Tex, Buster did not quite understand the leashes but adapted quickly and wasn’t too afraid after long. Buster has a docked tail which wiggles happily whenever people pet him and talk to him. He too would benefit from some training, but seems eager to please which can make things much easier for both human and canine. Take this love- bunny home with you today, and let him hop (and wiggle) into your heart! |
Hudson - # 26738 |
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
Hudson is a big, beautiful yellow labrador! He appears to be a purebred, and a good-looking one at that! Hudson came in as I was leaving today, and I didn't get much information on him. He appears to be well-fed and has a collar on, so hopefully there is an owner out looking for him! However, if they don't show up this is a great opportunity to scoop him up. Update: What a happy, handsome boy he is! That jolly face says it all - he's a lab, he's a goof and he's proud of it too. Somebody must be missing Hudson, because he appears to be a well loved and well cared for dog. But that's no guarantee his family will be able to find him here. Now's your chance to add a real canine classic to your family! |
Kramer - #26697 |
![]() ![]() |
Kramer is available to rescue groups only. This handsome boy is currently being treated for a neck injury and is very frightened of the leash. However, he is more than happy to hang out with you and let you pet him. He follows by your side but shies away if you try to put a leash on him. Some of the animal control officers suspect he may have had a traumatic past with a leash. Because of this, he needs to go to a rescue that will spend the time to rehabilitate him and help him become a well-rounded dog. He needs an experienced individual who has the patience to work with him on a leash and allow him to trust it. Once he overcomes his fear, he will be a healthier and happier boy. *Rescue groups only!* |
Woody - #26716 |
![]() ![]() ![]() |
Woody is a people lover! He was very nice and polite and walked very well on a leash. Someone has taught this dog well. He was perfectly happy to sit and hang out with his new friends, occasionally getting up to sniff his surroundings (as any good basset hound will do). Woody won't win any running races, but he'll certainly be a great friend and family member to whomever adopts him. When you visit, take Woody for a leisurely spin around the block. We think you'll fall in love. |
Dexter - #26726 |
![]() |
Dexter is Henrietta's roommate, and can usually be found hanging back on the comfy Kuranda bed or scarfing down a snack. He has a big wormy belly right now, and some hair loss along his back (either from fleas or just poor nutrition), but he will look great in no time! Dexter has a striking blue eye, and is also very playful. These two pups are just adorable! |
Buddy and Pal - #s26721, 26722 |
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
Buddy and Pal are quite scared here at animal control. They look nearly identical, but are in separate runs. They need some time to learn to trust humans. They are full grown at 60 pounds. Could they be your Buddy or Pal? Buddy is a sensitive boy who is a bit unsure of his surroundings. When I first entered his pen, he backed away and went inside. However, once I headed to the gate of his pen, he followed and accepted the leash around his neck- so don't let his initial shyness deter you from seeing this beautifully marked lab mix! Since he is a bit sensitive, he would really love a calm and positive owner to help him get out of his shell. He could certainly become more outgoing merely by leaving the pound, so give this boy a chance! It took some coaxing to get these boys out of their run, but our patience was rewarded by seeing them relax and have a little fun in the interaction pen. We even got a few kisses! They pottied as soon as they got in the pen, and their run was clean, so these pups are probably the 'naturally housebroken' type. These boys obviously have a lot of love and devotion to lavish on their people. They are bonded to each other, but they definitely don't have to be adopted together - after a little bit of adjustment time, they'll bond just as closely to their new humans. |
Preston - #26731 |
![]() ![]() |
Preston came in to Animal Control just as they were closing up for the day and we were leaving, so his pictures aren't the best. He was a very friendly fellow who seemed a bit confused as to where he was. He is full grown at 23 pounds, and incredibly cute with very expressive ears! This cute little boy is Preston! He appears to be a Boston Terrier mix with his coloring and markings, little nose, expressive ears and happy-go-lucky personality! Preston is a little love muffin of a dog who knows exactly what rope toys were made for! He seems to also know that the leash brings adventures and his bottom wiggled in pure excitement before our walk. Preston settled down after a short while in the interaction pen, and was happy to receive affection- and return it tenfold! |
Sally - #26727 |
Sally is the most adorable little teenage dog - she has incredibly expressive ears that will catch your eye right away. Sometimes one is floppy, and sometimes they both point straight up! She has a sparkle in her eye that makes you wonder what she's thinking. Sally is very eager to please, and was happy to sit for us when we asked. She is only 32 pounds, and probably won't grow over 50 pounds. Sally really won our hearts today - let her into yours! ADOPTED! YAY! |
Hines - #26717 |
Hines is a cute little guy that likes to be held but also likes to explore. He probably went exploring too far and got lost from home! But he has no id tags and no microchip, so he has to hope someone finds him! Hines is only 9 pounds and fully grown, so he can fit in anywhere! ADOPTED! HOORAY! |
Henrietta - #26724 |
Henrietta lives with Dexter, and they are quite the odd couple. Henrietta is very affectionate and playful, but she is also still a tiny baby, so it's hard to know how big she will get! Right now, Henrietta is only 6 pounds, and she would love a new home with a family that she can grow up with! ADOPTED! WONDERFUL! |
Duncan - #26719 |
Duncan is a very sweet guy who loves to have his back scratched and his belly rubbed! He has a few faint freckles on his otherwise white face, and is very compact at only 34 pounds. Duncan is also already neutered! This little guy likes to walk on the leash and loves to cuddle - come see him soon! ADOPTED!:) |
Charlie - #26714 |
![]() ![]() ![]() |
Charlie is a young guy, but he's got great manners. He was very excited to see everything around him, but he did not pull on his leash as we took him on a tour of the grounds. We meet some of the puppies at Animal Control and Charlie could not wait to meet them, though when they came up to sniff, he was very polite and played the part of the 'older dog' even though he has just emerged from puppyhood himself. Calm but playful, we think Charlie has LOTS of potential in a variety of homes. Beagles are smart and eager to please, so he should make a quick study in doggy school. You HAVE to meet Charlie when you come to animal control. ADOPTED!:) |
Minnie - #26707 |
![]() |
Little Minnie is very insecure at the pound. She was trapped at the airport because she had been running around there for a while. She was probably very frightened will all of the planes and other loud noises and now she finds herself at the pound, which also tends to be very loud. She needs a patient and loving owner who can coax her out of her shell so that she can better trust people and become more comfortable in a home environment. She is a small girl, weighing only 11 pounds, so a family without very small children (unless they are very respectful of her) would be the best fit for Minnie. RESCUED! THANKS GA RESCUE AND REHAB! |
Theodore - #26709 |
![]() ![]() |
Theodore is enjoying a little slumber party with Alvin, Simon, and Bindi. He had just eaten a big meal when it was time for his photo shoot, so he was very sleepy. He’s still a very young puppy, so most of his day will consist of eating, pooping, and sleeping, at least for the next few weeks. After that, he will be a bundle of fun! He will probably be at least a medium-sized boy once he’s full grown, and he will definitely be strong. Someone with experience training puppies (or someone willing to take some sort of puppy class) would be the best fit for Theodore so he can grow into a well-behaved young man. ADOPTED!;) |
