The image of cold dogs, lying on a hard, often wet cement floor paints a bleak picture of life in an animal shelter. That is why the Kuranda Dog Bed Company created a Donate a Bed Program to help provide dogs in shelters across the country with comfortable raised beds where they can relax during the time they are in the shelter. If you would like to help a shelter dog by providing a warm, dry, comfortable off the floor bed, just visit www.kuranda.com and click on “Donate a Bed” for the shelter of your choice.

Shelter hours:
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday 10am-4pm
Saturday and Sunday 12pm-4pm
Closed Wednesdays

Athenspets.net is updated with current pictures twice per week and updated status reports of each dog every other day or so. We keep it as current as we can, but there are times when you may see a dog featured here who may not still be available. Call Animal Control if you have questions about a dog.

The cost of adopting a dog is $50.00, which includes a DHLPP-C vaccination, deworming of your new friend, an adoption information packet, and a implanted microchip. You, as the adopter, are responsible for the cost of spay or neuter and for returning proof of surgery to Animal Control. Adopters must obtain a rabies vaccination for their dog by the time the dog is 4 months old.

The adoption fee is $50 and includes a puppy's first vaccinations, a dewormer and a microchip (inserted under the dog's skin so that he/she can always be traced back to you if lost).  At the time your dog is spayed or neutered, you are reimbursed $25 of the adoption fee, so your final cost for your new friend is only $25. It will be the most rewarding $25 you ever spend!!  The process works like this...when you go to the shelter, you pick out the dog you want. Then you have to fill out an application. If approved, you can pick the puppy up the next day (if the dog has been at the shelter for the legal 5 day holding period). However, if the dog is old enough to be spayed or neutered, animal control will schedule your dog with a vet, and you pick him up from there. It's that simple. The awesome animal control officers do most of the work for you! All you have to do is show up at the shelter or vet's office to pick up your new friend!

For specific information on the dogs featured on athenspets.net, call the animal control office at 706 613-3540. Please refer to the ledger number when calling.  *Don't forget, Animal Control keeps both 'lost' and 'found' reports on pets! If you have found a dog that you are keeping out of the goodness of your heart, feel free to call the shelter and let them know, just in case someone reports it missing!!*
Dogs are held for a minimum of 5 days if they are strays.  After this 5-day period, any day could be the last for ANY dog at the shelter.  If you are interested in rescuing a dog, PLEASE don't wait until a certain day to call.  You should be organizing the rescue througout the dog's stay at animal control.  If you wait until the last minute, the dog you want may no longer be available.  Euthanasias occur everyday...not just on one particular day.
