Why choose me?

Update 4/8: Roxie is doing great! Her initial bloodwork indicated some issues, but they’re likely from being starved. We’ll know more when she has her follow-up bloodwork later this week. She has a raging urinary tract infection (common in housetrained female dogs without regular access to the outside–Roxie was kept crated for most of the time in the last few months before coming to Animal Control) but no other conditions that need medical (as opposed to nutritional) intervention. It costs Athenspets approximately $500 for each abused animal since we need to carefully document the animal’s medical condition at impound and regularly after that. It’s worth it, but it means we can really use donations to help offset the cost. For the month of April, we have a donor willing to match all donations to Athenspets up to a total of $5000. Would you consider donating so that we can continue to gather the evidence we need to prosecute abusers? To learn more about the matching funds campaign or to donate to Athenspets, please click here. Thanks!

Seeing Roxie broke my heart. She was afraid and obviously hasn’t been well cared for. She only weighs 31 pounds. I stepped into her kennel, and when I said her name, she stepped forward and let me pet and leash her. She was still nervous in the interaction pen so I had Dixie join us. What a transformation as Roxie lit up! It’s obvious that these two girls love each other and had a great time running together or joining me for pets and treats. I could only give Roxie a few bits of treats because she’s on a special diet to help her gain weight, but she’d happily sit for the few that she was given. Roxie was surrendered with both Dixie and Max. Her former owners said she’s good with kids and other dogs. She’s used to being in a crate and is also house trained but has had a few mistakes. After watching her in the interaction pen, it may be that she has a bladder infection. Thanks to the Athenspets Medical Fund, she’s scheduled for a vet visit. Roxie is nine years old, but she still has lots of energy and didn’t have any problems keeping up with her best friend Dixie. She’s only available to rescues because she’s not at a healthy weight to be spayed. Hopefully, she’ll find a home where she can enjoy her golden years being cared for and loved.
